Conrail rostered thousands of covered hoppers across various classes from railroads such as Jersey Central, Penn Central, Reading Company, and others. Many were renumbered and repainted for Conrail.
In 1976, Conrail inherited thousands of covered hoppers from its predecessors like Penn Central, Lehigh Valley, and Erie Lackawanna that survived in service in their original paint schemes and numbers.
The H42 and H44 are nearly exact duplicates. Pennsylvania, New York Central, Penn Central, and Erie Lackawanna all owned these cars. Broadly speaking, Conrail placed them in series CR 884577-884850 and CR 885020-885300.
