Conrail did not have a large fleet of articulated spine cars. Those they had were for 53' trailers and wore the Quality paint scheme. (Only TTX owned the 48' 5-section spine cars.) Each section of the car was designated as A, B, C, D, or E. The A and B sections were on opposite ends of the car. This A section of CR 790083 is transporting a UPS trailer on TV-79 (Boston, MA - Chicago-Englewood, IL. TV-79 was a mixed TOFC (trailer-on-flar-car) and COFC (containter-on-flat-car) train. In the 1990's, UPS did not place any UPS logos on their intermodal trailers, fearing that thieves would recognize their trailers on a stationary train and break into them. This had been a problem at the time, which is why Conrail created the Trailvan trailer CRZ 204022 to use in sting operations. A photo of CRZ 204022 can be found on the Trailvan page.

Between 1986 and 1987, Gunderson built a number of Twin-Stack well cars for Conrail, placing the cars in series CR 795100-795109. Even though this car is part of that series, it was purchased from Greenbrier. The "A" car is the first car in a string of five articulated cars, all carrying the same car number.
