Former Reading Company 34' twin bay coal hopper. Not many survived into Conrail, so photos are rare of these cars. Some were repainted into Conrail oxide red; we know of at least CR 404138. This hopper got stenciles instead. If modeling this car in HO scale, use the Atlas two bay hopper.

This is a former Reading Company HR1C that must have been refurbished and then renumbered into a series of numbers belonging to former NYC cars. Most likely only a handful of these cars survived from the Reading Company.

While this hopper is identical to the 433217 above, the stencil scheme is slightly different. For example, the extra-large CR stencils and smaller 'Conrail' logo. Tom shot this hopper in the scrap line.

Is this a PC or a CR hopper? I say both! Tom shot this interesting car in the scrap line.

Tom shot a rather rare Conrail coke car. 470051 is part of the HG7B class of 53' 2" hoppers in the CR 470041-470150 series. Illinois Central Gulf was the original owner of the cars in the early 1970s and used them in woodship service. ICG sold them off to Greenbrier, and Conrail got them from Greenbrier in mid- to late-1990 (hence the 'G' in the CR class). Conrail put them into coke service, for example, on the Pope's Creek Secondary to Sharon Steel at Farrell. Conrail sold the HG7B's to CSXT in 1994. Thanks to Lon Godshall, Terry Stuart, and Steve Timko for the info. Thanks especially to Tom Haag for this rare shot!

Note the holes across the top that are filled with straw and gunk to plug them--a common feature of older hoppers and a neat modeling touch.

The H1B differs from the H1A primarily on the end panels, which are shorter on the H1B. I'm sure there are other differences, but this is the most notable.

Many modelers enjoy weathering their hoppers but have a difficult time knowing what to do when it comes to the interiors of coal hoppers. This photo shows the full interior of a modern Conrail hopper. Thumbnail shows only portion of photo. Note the mix of oxide, gray, rust, and black. Don't forget the coal dust in the bays. Plus the braces are fully visable--check the thick weld marks.

Most likely a Bethlehem Steel (BSC) rebodied car dated 4-88. Shave off upper length of ladder on model and replace with grab irons to create more accurate model. Eric Neubauer supplied the following info on these cars: CR 494870-494969 (ex-HLMX 5000-5114), CR 494970-494999 (ex-HLMX 10000-10124). All cars were built 9-66. For HO modeling, use the Bowser predecorated or the Life-Like model. For N modeling, use the Atlas or Life-Like model.
