Former Reading Company 34' twin bay coal hopper. Not many survived into Conrail, so photos are rare of these cars. Some were repainted into Conrail oxide red; we know of at least CR 404138. This hopper got stencils instead.

This is a former Reading Company HR1C that must have been refurbished and then renumbered into a series of numbers belonging to former NYC cars. Most likely only a handful of these cars survived from the Reading Company.

While this hopper is identical to CR 433217 above, the stencil scheme is slightly different. For example, the extra-large CR stencils and smaller 'Conrail' logo. Tom shot this hopper in the scrap line.

A rare car, CR 470051 is part of the HG7B class of 53' 2" hoppers in the CR 470041-470150 series and was meant for hauling coke to steel plants. These cars have an interesting story. Originally owned by Illinois Central Gulf in the early 1970's to haul woodchips, the cars were sold off to Greenbrier. Conrail purchased them from Greenbrier in mid- to late-1990. Conrail added the 'G' for Greenbrier to the cars' class and placed them into coke service. They frequently worked on the Pope's Creek Secondary transporting coke to the Sharon Steel plant in Farrell, PA. When the steel plant closed in 1994, Conrail sold their HG7B hoppers to CSXT that same year. In 1995, the Sharon Steel blast furnaces were torn down and sold as scrap for $1.65 million. Thanks go to long-standing friends of the CRCyc Lon Godshall, Terry Stuart, and Steve Timpko for the history of these rare hoppers. A huge thanks to Tom Haag for the photo, which has been online for nearly two decades as I rewrite this in 2020.

The H1B differs from the H1A primarily on the end panels, which are shorter on the H1B. There probably are other differences, but this is the most notable.
