Erie Railroad
A rare surviving Erie 40' boxcar still in service 40 years later in its original paint. Carl made a great catch. On a personal note, back in the 1970's I used to see 40' cars still in service, but I was more interested in shooting the new shiny cars, like Railbox. I was a teenager. Who cared about those old things? The ignorance of youth!

Fruehauf built the X74 50' rib-sided boxcar for Penn Central between October 1972 and February 1973. They were in series PC 167000-167999. They survived onto Conrail under the same class.

Despatch built the 50' riveted-steel double-door boxcar in April 1956 as Lot 857B for New York Central. They were in series NYC 41500-41499. Penn Central repainted PC 172648 in December 1972. Having never been repainted into Conrail, this car was taken off the Conrail roster some time during the 1980's. It's sitting here in an abandoned scrap line.

Peoria & Eastern Railway
One could still find Peoria & Eastern equipment in 1979. Witness the P&E 50' sliding door boxcar #4337 at Kent, Ohio in January 1979. The P&E was one of those little corners of the big Penn Central and even bigger Conrail system.

The XLj class (reclassed BR50L class under Conrail) of 50' boxcars was built in 1972 by Pullman-Standard at their Bessemer, AL, shops. It is similar to the standard PS-1 50' boxcar. These were in series RDG 20000-20199. Conrail renumbered them in series CR 231597-231795, with a couple renumbered into the CR 209970 series. Several cars, including RDG 20029, were never renumbered and survived onto NS and CSX. I caught RDG 20029 in service for Conrail on a CSX train seven years after it had been removed from the Conrail roster. This class of boxcars were delivered with Youngstown doors, but somewhere along the way a Superior door was added to this car. RDG 20029 survived long enough to be tracked down and given NYC marking for the CSX/NS acquisition of Conrail.
