In June 1987 and June 1990, Conrail in their Hollidaysburg car shops rebuilt 282 former Penn Central 60' X62B general-purpose boxcars into Plate F extended-height boxcars designed to transport auto parts. The cars now had 20" sliding sill cushioning and an increased capacity of 7330 cubic feet. In early 1987, the first group was completed and placed in series CR 221069-221299. The second group was completed in 1990 and placed in series CR 221851-221903.

Another example of a B62C in its original paint scheme. Not sure if the right-hand door is original from the rebuild or got replaced afterward.

Conrail did a similar rebuilding project as the B63C class boxcars. Around the same time in 1988 and 1989, the Hollidaysburg car shops rebuilt 268 former-Penn Central X76 60' boxcars into extended height double-door boxcars, with the left-hand door being half width. The new B62D class took series CR 221300-221568. As can be seen in these photos, some cars got different door styles than others. CR 221315 is seen here in the Conrail Quality scheme.

CR 221392 is in the standard late-1980's Conrail boxcar scheme. The grime clearly shows the panels Conrail added to the former-Penn Central cars to make them Plate F excess height.

As part of the rebuilding program to extend the lifetime of Conrail's aging fleet of Penn Central (originally Pennsylvania Railroad) 60' boxcars, the Hollidaysburg Car Shops rebuilt and extended the height of 99 X61D general-purpose boxcars in 1990 into the new class B62F boxcars in series CR 221693-221791. Again, these were double-door boxcars meant for transporting auto parts.

It may seem odd for an E series of cars to come out after an F series, but that is what happened in 1990 when Conrail continued their rebuilding program of aging Pennsylvania Railroad boxcars into extended-height Plate F cars. The B62E class comprised of 8 rebuilt X61D boxcars and 42 X61E boxcars. These new B62E boxcars were placed in series CR 221792-221842.

With CR 221837 we have the exact information about its creation. It began as PRR 110815 was rebuilt in June 1990 in the same car shops where it was built originally in June 1966. In 1966 under the Pennsylvania Railroad, the shops were called the Sam Rea Car Shops. They would become Conrail's Hollidaysburg Car Shops. Here CR 221837 is fresh out of the shops in the Conrail Quality scheme.
