CRL 502

CRL 502

ATSF 8012

A Santa Fe C30-7 Conrail purchased from GE/ATSF for the Conrail lease fleet waits for service in Altoona Shop's yard, sans prime mover. This was the time when there were probably twenty or so like it sitting there, as well as the NJT U34h's that had just ended their career and were well hidden out of camera range. This unit would be rebuilt then painted in the simplified blue scheme as CRL 502.

A former-ATSF unit originally to be placed into Conrail's lease arm, but 505 was one of several units transferred into regular Conrail service. Shawn notes that when this photo was taken 505 and 538 had just been out-shopped from the NYS&W Utica Shops under contract for GE and sounded and ran like new. "CRL" has been repainted with "CR" on the cab.

CR 6601 is on UNL-40 (loaded unit coal train bound for the Milliken, NY power plant, which closed in August 2019) sitting on Ithaca Secondary after running around its train. The red L on the cab designates this as one of the locomotives Conrail leased to the Southern Pacific during the early 1990's. SP applied the letter, but Conrail took their time removing them.
