EMD GP-30: Photos

Like many CR-stenciled locos, this one had a hodgepodge of replaced equipment. In this shot of the engineer's side, you can see the new cab signal box next to the nose hood, plus the markings of the removed grab iron behind it. This was the Reading Company's first GP-30, former RDG 3600. Improved photo online.

When Conrail shops stenciled a number of Reading units, it seems as if they liked to stay within the inner trim of the old nose diamond, but were totally sloppy on the cabs. For many shop crews, painting out the logos of their home railroad, such as the Reading Company, was a painful experience. This units also has two styles of CR stencils on the nose. Plus the fireman's side marker light casing has been replaced with a blue one.

It has been a year since the photos above have been taken, but 2168 is still in its Reading colors. It's with repainted C-628 #6736 (former LV 640) and an unidentified Uboat leading a coal drag.

On a dreary winter day, former RDG 3601 has been fully repainted in Conrail blue with a Conrail cab signal box on the front walkway. The cab rain gutter tips us off of the unit's heritage.

Now this loco (former RDG 3602) got an interesting repainting when stencils were applied. It looks as if it got repainted twice. The first time green RDG paint was used on the cab. Then primer gray was used at a later date on top of that. If anyone has a photo of this unit stenciled for CR prior to this shot, I'd love to post it and see if my hunch is correct.

Time and poor maintenance have been taking their toll on 2170 as it sits in storage at the Bethlehem Engine Terminal. Rust, dents, and fading paint have replaced the unit's once-nice paint scheme. Notice that SD-9 CR 6909 is also here in storage as of 1981.

Former RDG 3601 is looking shabby six years after the Conrail merger. The green paint Conrail used to cover the old Reading logos seems to be holding up rather well, but the rest of the unit is falling apart.

This was the final CR GP-30 in service (former RDG 3607). A great roof shot of it in its final days. Rust and grime had taken their toll by then. Conrail stored, retired, then reacitivated, then stored, then reacivated, then stored their GP-30s so many times I think even Conrail lost track!

GP-30's were never too common on the B&A, and almost all the time they were stuck in the middle of the lashup, as the 2188 is, on BOSE at Hinsdale, MA. on 12/17/1983. The 2188 was the first GP-30 in the PC series.

An unusual paint-out unit. Note the spelled out "CONRAIL" on the long hood and nose (I assume the rear had the same) but no steel-wheel logo and still in PC black! These are the sort of engines I love, especially when people tell me that CR never painted such a beast!

One of my b&w photos I took back in the 70s. Two CR-stenciled former PC GP-30s were delivering a freight with some cabins on the lead. The fellow in the white shirt was my buddy, Ken Reinert. Looks like he got some new papers that day from the crew. We sure had fun back then.

CR 2246 (former PC 2246) is seen here working Greenbrier Yard in Philadelphia, but she will be mothballed in Allentown within several days, as pictured below. Such was the life of a Conrail GP-30 in the early 1980s, in service and out of service as traffic dictated.
