CR 2168

CR 2168

This was the Reading Company's first GP30, former RDG 3600. Like many CR-stenciled locos, this one had a hodgepodge of replaced equipment. 2168 has a new cab signal box next to the nose hood, plus the markings of the removed grab iron behind it. It was a dreary day in Aberdeen.

Most predecessor locomotives got CR stencils at their home shops. Many of the former Reading units that got CR stencils had black or green painted within the trim of the Reading Lines diamond on the nose and rear hood. For many shop crews, painting out the logos of their home railroad, such as the Reading Company, was a painful experience. xRDG 2168 also has two styles of CR stencils on the nose. Plus the conductor's side marker light casing has been replaced with a blue one.

xRRG 2168 is still in its Reading colors. It's with repainted C-628 #6736 (former LV 640) and an unidentified U-boat leading a coal drag. The U-boat is running long-hood forward.

On a dreary winter day, former RDG 3601 has been fully repainted in Conrail blue with a Conrail cab signal box on the front walkway. The cab rain gutter tips us off of the unit's Reading Company heritage.

Now this loco (former RDG 3602) got an interesting repainting when stencils were applied. It looks as if it got repainted twice. The first time green RDG paint was used on the cab. Then primer gray was used at a later date on top of that.

Former RDG 3601 is looking shabby six years after the Conrail merger. The green paint Conrail used to cover the old Reading logos seems to be holding up rather well, but the rest of the unit is falling apart.

This was the final Conrail GP30 in service (former RDG 3607). Conrail stored, retired, then reactivated, then stored, then reacivated, then stored their GP30's so many times even Conrail probably lost track.

GP30's were never too common on the Boston & Albany, and most of the time they were stuck in the middle of the lash up, as is CR 2188 on BOSE (Boston, MA - Selkirk, NY) at Hinsdale, MA.. CR 2188 was the first GP30 in the Penn Central series.

CR 2230

Four years prior to Dave capturing CR 2230 (former PC 2230) at the Collinwood engine terminal along with CR U33C 6551 (former PC 6551), the 2230 had been sitting in the dead line at Enola, PA. Officially, CR 2230 had been retired on April 11, 1991 though stored prior to that. Here we see her back in service for a brief time. Within a few years of being spotted in Enola, CR 2230 has become extremely rusted.
