Conrail inherited a total of 41 C-425's from the Penn Central. 31 units were former Pennsylvania Railroad units, while 10 were former New Haven. They were assigned to series CR 2416-2459. As of October 1979, units still on the roster were renumbered into the 5060-5088 series to make way for new locomotive arrivals; however, Conrail retired some of the units before they could be renumbered.
