1993 continued the success and stability Conrail had been experiencing during the 1990's. With coal usage seeing a resurgence in the nation, the Hollidaysburg car shops manufactured more Coalporter gondolas to keep up with the increased demand. More SD60M'a and C40-8W's were ordered to pull the long unit coal trains across the mountains of Pennsylvania. A couple dozen rebuilt GP35's remained, and two GP30's remained on roster. As Conrail continued to shed 'clusters' of branchlines, the aging switchers and GP38's continued to be shed as well. Conrail was the leanest it had been.
