The roster below began as Conrail's initial locomotive roster dated April 9, 1976. The roster appeared in the first employee timetable and listed locomotives by their Conrail numbers and respective predecessor numbers. Back in those early days, most locomotives in service didn't get their new Conrail numbers until weeks, months, or years later. When a unit did get its new Conrail number in the form of a cheap stencil slapped on the side of the cab, the shop crews usually forgot to put the new number inside the locomotive cab. Anyone who worked on Conrail or railfanned the railroad from 1976 to 1978 can tell you how chaotic life was.Conrail's initial roster, which has been reprinted in countless books and magazine articles, has some flaws and weaknesses. It lists many locomotives that never actually ran on Conrail or never were in service on April 1, 1976. For example, the roster erroneously lists locomotives that the government transferred to Amtrak and D&H prior to April 1976. Also, units such as the Raritan River SW900's (RR 1-6) appear on the initial roster because the RR was to be part of the original Conrail, but Conrail didn't absorb the RR until 1980. Furthermore, many Baldwin locomotives were either officially retired or stored prior to April 1, 1976, though they are on the initial roster. Then there were the wrecked units that somehow appear, and so on.
The roster on this page has been my attempt to correct the published 1976 Conrail roster, so the it lists only locomotives that were on roster on April 1, 1976. Information has come from print several sources, predecessor rosters, many former Conrail employes, and railfans. It has been a group effort.
