In 1978, Conrail began rebuilding worn-out Alco RS-11, RSD12, and RSD-15 units into traction motor slugs. Four-axle slugs were classed MT-4 (Motor Trailer 4-axle), while six-axle slugs were MT-6 (Motor Trailer 6-axle). The fist MT-4 slug that Conrail created here looks fairly worn for its age, even though it had been repainted with white numberboards since it first rolled out of the shops in January 1979. Conrail #1000 was rebuilt from Conrail RS-11 #7634 (former Penn Central #7634, prior Pennsylvania Railroad #8634).

Conrail #1002 originally rolled out of the shops in February 1979, the product of Conrail RS-11 #7636 (former Penn Central #7636, prior Pennsylvania #8636). When this photo was taken, Conrail #1002 only had a little over two years of service left until it was retired.
