IRN 751

CR 8534

IRN 751

Ironton #751 was the only surviving Ironton locomotive on Conrail and was Conrail's only Baldwin DS-4-4-1000. It was never renumbered as a Conrail locomotive and was retired in its Ironton colors. There was a rumor that a railfan painted out the logo and renumbered the unit while it sat in Altoona's deadline, but I've never seen any proof. Well, 21 years after I posted this photo, some info was passed my way about this unit. Over on The Baldwin Diesel Zone, they have a photo of IRN 751 in June 1977 with a CR 8534 painted over the IRN cab numbers. The "Ironton" herald on the sides is untouched. They think it might have gotten the CR numbers when it was out of service, heading toward the deadline.
