This C39-8 has had some accident repairs involving a repainted nose, since a general repaint would not have been warranted so soon after their construction. On the factory C39-8's, the 'Conrail' name on the nose was below the nose handrail.

When delivered, the C39's had a single handrail on the nose of the engine. Unfortunately, this handrail caused several difficulties for the crews, so on all the C39's Conrail replaced the small handrail with two "L" shaped rails.
