Notice how the Sinclair radio antenna is placed on the side of the cab hood instead of the middle and how CR 8612, a former Penn Central and New York Central SW8, has a two-chime horn instead of the standard one-chime horn for these units.

CR 8665 SW8M is former LV 251 SW8. Conrail designated these former Lehigh Valley units as SW8M's (M for "modified"). Conrail equipped some of these switchers with a large box on the front of the hood. Inside the box is a modified cooling system that eliminated the belt drive to the main cooling fan, replacing it with a pair of motor-driven 36" fans. Also, by the look of the simple handrails and the lack of MU (multiple unit) cables, this former LV unit, along with several other former LV SW8's, never had dynamic brakes. The downward slope from the rear of the hood to the cab also denotes a lack of dynamic brakes.

The first and third orders of SW8's that Lehigh Valley purchased came equipped with dynamic brakes, which can be spotted by the brake's vents directly in front of the cab on the long hood and the squared-off section of the long hood just in front of the cab. (Conrail removed the vents on some of these units.) The second order did not come equipped with dynamics. The Lehigh Valley purchased these units with dynamic brakes solely for use on a section on the LV called Weatherly Hill, which was the railroad's steepest grade. Back in the steam era, the LV would bring their new steam locomotives up Weatherly Hill pulling fully loaded coal trains as a test for the newly purchased locomotives. When steam locomotives were phased out, the LV still needed something to bring the trains down Weatherly Hill's steep grade, so the LV had these two orders of SW8's built with dynamics specifically for this purpose.

Notice how Conrail applied the CR stencils to the cab of 8673 (former LV 259) instead of on the long hood. The font for the stencils and numbers is also unusual instead of Conrail's Futura Bold. CR 8673 also has had its dynamic brakes removed.

Conrail still has not applied its stencils or numbers to LV 261, but Lehigh Valley heralds are all but worn off on this unit anyway from being worked hard on Weatherly Hill.

When Conrail repainted EL 365 into CR 8694, they also removed the large spark arrestor that it originally had when it was an Erie Lackawanna unit. By this time, Conrail was done with their SW8's and they are sitting in the storage line.

At least this EL unit got a "balloon" spark arrestor on its exhaust stack. Modifications to exhaust stacks on early SW's seem common on most railroads. Former EL 371 (DL&W 511).
