A typical unit (former EL 3645) in Conrail's first paint scheme. Not much to really say about this roster shot.

It's three years into Conrail and 6669 (former EL 3638) is looking pretty worn down, but she's still in the lead even on this ex-EL trackage in Akron. She will eventually get a fresh coat of Conrail blue not far in the future. Also, notice how the shop crew used red to paint out the original EL logo and numbers, and the pattern it has created around the decal cab numbers. This would be an interesting effect to model. See EL 3638 below for a good photo of her prior to the paint-out.

You can really see the brake notch in the nose in this shot. Also notice the old EL "Safety First" logo in the lower corner of the nose that the shops decided to leave in tact. Former EL 3649.

In this nose shot you can really see the notch for the hand brake wheel. An in case you tried to stand on the air hose storage area on the pilot, please read the signs--No Footboards! An unusual touch. Former EL 3651.

The 6694 was retired from Conrail then sold off to VMV leasing, where she sat as a rusting hulk. Unfortunately, I will need more information about the locomotive.

Erie Lackawanna:

Erie Lackawanna's salute the America's 200th anniversary in 1976. I would like to know if this unit ever got CR stencils, or did it go straight to a blue repaint? Sean Steele informed me that the unit was stenticiled and renumbered into CR 6669. The numbers are white on a red panel on the side of the cab.

Kevin recalls, it's shortly after "C" day and this EL SDP-45/SD-45 combo is eastbound on the NYC main at Depew, NY, just east of Buffalo's Frontier yard. Note the trademark NYC cantilever signal in the distance, and the IC boxcar to the right with its "Mainline of Mid America" slogan in script. Sure wish they'd paint boxcars like that nowadays. The 3654 is one of the few 6-motors to receive the experimental plow stripes. I don't recall seeing the plow stripes on EL 4-motors, but the GP-35's did carry experimental Canadian snow shields over the engine air intakes.
