EMD SD-60: Photos
|
|
|
One of the three EMD Demo SD-60 units that Conrail purchased in August 1984 but they did not appear on the roster until January 1986, during which time EMD continued using them as demo units, reducing the cost for Conrail when they officially came on the roster. Unfortunately, this is the only photo I shot of this unit. For some reason, my luck was usually bad with shooting SD-60's. If modeling one of Conrail's SD-60's, the three EMD Demo units would be the easiets choice, since they have standard class lights, the horn mounted on the cab instead of the long hood, the nose has the standard 2 grabs on the front and 2 grabs to the left side of the nose facing forward, and non-recessed (low clearance) radiator fans. 6840 was in bad shape when I caught up with it in 1995.

Taken a few years later, the 6840 is in even worse shape than my shot from 1995 above.

The conductor side is even worse than the engineer side. A real weathering challenge for any modeler.

Here we see the second EMD Demo unit from the rear. Note the standard class lights on the rear as well. Plus it had been repainted in the Quality scheme. All three demo units (6840-6842) were equipped with Hump Control, the only Conrail SD-60's so equipped.

This is a better shot of 6841, a former demo unit, taken from the front while still in its original paint scheme.

If you choose to model one of the non-EMD demo units, you will have a much more difficult time. For example, the tall battery box is unique to Conrail SD-60's, so is the countersunk radiator fans, the three grab irons up the engineer side of the noew, and the FRA-approved class lights. Plus the inertial intake grid is countersunk on Conrail units. These were also the first Conrail units with white boards.

You can see the taller than usual cab signal box on the front of 6847 as it leads PIBE (Pittsburgh - Bethlehem) along with an unidentified GP-40-2.

I actually took a decent SD-60 photo during the 1990s! And then the developer decides to blow up my photos slightly larger than they should have. I guess I never won when it came to these engines.
