CR 6840

CR 6840

One of the three EMD Demo SD60 units that Conrail purchased in August 1984, but they did not appear on the roster until January 1986, during which time EMD continued using them as demo units, reducing the cost for Conrail when they officially came on the roster. The three EMD Demo units have standard class lights, the horn mounted on the cab instead of the long hood, the nose has the standard 2 grabs on the front and 2 grabs to the left side of the nose facing forward, and recessed (low clearance) radiator fans.

Here we see the second EMD Demo unit from the rear. Note the standard class lights on the rear as well. Plus it had been repainted in the Quality scheme. All three demo units (6840-6842) were equipped with Hump Control, the only Conrail SD60's so equipped.

The tall battery box, the countersunk radiator fans, the three grab irons up the engineer side of the nose, and the FRA-approved class lights are unique to Conrail SD60's. The inertial intake grid also is countersunk on Conrail units. These were also the first Conrail units with white boards instead of the traditional black.
