CR 6964

CR 6964

Formerly an SD40 from PAC Leasing #606 and prior to that KCS 606. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a shot from the front since the train was moving too fast for my camera.

Look for the very small Conrail logo above the air reservoir. With the doors open, you can peek into the prime mover (engine). Also note that where the small gray AEI tag is located on the running board, the white stripe is broken. This unit had its hand brake mounted on the rear and the area in the nose where the brake usually is was plated over.

CR 6967

CR 6967

CR 6967 was former PAC 613 SD40 (nee-KCS 613). In 1998, I had posted the original photos I shot of CR 6967 after getting wrecked. (I say original photos because eventually I will be rescanning and uploading better images.) Anyway, I never realized that I had shot CR 6967 14 months before its wreck. Here it's westbound onto the Belt Line.

CR 6967

CR 6967

Former SD40 PAC 613 (nee-KCS 613). This unit is heading west from Reading, PA to Altoona, PA on an SHOP train. This unit had been hit by a runaway covered hopper in Reading, PA. The hopper broke loose from the rear of a westbound train in Wernersville, PA on the Harrisburg Line. The car then rolled all the way to into Reading, over ten miles away. The dispatcher sent CR 6967 and another SD40-2 to stop the runaway covered hopper, but it impacted CR 6967 at CP Center in Reading before the two engines could get out onto the Harrisburg Line. Reportedly the covered hopper impacted CR 6967 at around 35mph, rupturing the SD40-R's fuel tank. MoW crews used the spilled sand from the covered hopper to clean up the fuel spill, which is a bit ironic.

Here is a shot of the same unit above after being rebuilt after the wreck. Notice that the new low hood no longer has classification lights. This unit always had a rear-mounted hand brake like CR 6966 above.

CR 6975 SD40-2R was rebuilt in 1993 from SD40-2 CR 6305 (former PC 60252) ad is seen here in Ashtabula Harbor Yard in 1997. During the rebuild, it got its safety stipe and white number boards.
