See the SD40-2 Prototype: Paint Schemes page for more info on the Olympic Road Trails scheme. This unit was repainted into the Quality scheme as of August 5, 1995. Use Microscale Decals MC-4022 (HO) Conrail US Cycling Locomotives 1992. Rich shot several photos of 6373 when the unit was freshly painted into the Olympic scheme.

The 6378 has been retrofitted with ditch lights. Originally, the SD40-2's did not contain this feature.

The Quality paint may be fairly fresh on this unit, but the logo has already been worn off on the nose. This would be a simple trick to do when modeling and give your model some character. Take the paint with which you used to cover the model and dry brush the blue over the Conrail decal. Easy as that! And only slight weathering will finish the model. If you're using a predecorated engine, try rubbing off the logo with a pencil eraser. This loco was the trailing unit of eastbound XCG (Cresson, PA) hauling empty coalporters.

A shot from the rear of 6425 shows that it never got the Quality logo on the end hood. This is a common problem with at least these units in the Quality scheme. Aside from different sized Quality logos, we now must worry about end and front logos as well! I'll try to point this out for each loco when possible.

For a while in 1978, Conrail SD40-2's filled in for E8's on the Broadway Limited, which would make a nice change of pace from the regular Amtrak engines.

Beginning in 1977, Conrail marked with a star SD40-2's 6431-64 and C30-7's 6600-6609 to designate them for an operational cost comparison program.

It had been an awesome day of railfanning on the Middle Division when 6444 rolled by on an eastbound freight. Judging from the splotches on the hood and trucks, somewhere along the line 6444 must have been behind a locomotive spewing oil. Then there is the sand covering the front trucks and fuel tank. At least the factory-applied paint has been holding up over the years!

A fairly standard Conrail SD40-2. It was teamed that day with CSX 7036 (C30-7) hauling an eastbound empty coal drag. In eastern PA during the 1990s, it was very common to find CSX power on regular Conrail trains. So many CSX units were on property at one point that a special order was issued not to use the CSX locos in switching and local service.

This unit appears to still have its 'as-delivered' paint, but has had ditch lights and new white numberboards added. The nose roof is still blue. It's also suffering from oil leaks, those black splotches along the access doors. Mid-consist on NSSE (Hagerstown, MD-Selkirk, NY) years before the NS acquisition.

New photo uploaded. Like most Conrail SD40-2's, this loco didn't visit the wash racks very often. Just a little road grime, wouldn't you say! No, that's not water splashed on the middle of the loco--that's a fresh oil leak. We gotta love those Conrail SD40-2's!

While this loco was still in its as-delivered scheme with blue walkways (no, that's not black paint you see--it's grime), it has received a black anti-skid nose roof, ditch lights, and new white numberboards. The builder's plates have been missing for a long time. ALHB (Allentown, PA - Harrisburg, PA).
