Conrail favored SD40-2's as helpers at Horseshoe Curve. Looks like the tie replacement program has started as well. When Conrail was formed in 1976, the physical plant of most of the railroads was horrible due to deferred maintenance.

It had been an awesome day of railfanning on the Middle Division when CR 6444 rolled by on an eastbound freight. Judging from the splotches on the hood and trucks, somewhere along the line CR 6444 must have been behind a locomotive spewing oil. Then there is the sand covering the front trucks and fuel tank. At least the factory-applied paint has been holding up over the years.
