EMD SD-38: Paint Roster
Conrail Cyclopedia Quality!

Conrail SD-38 The SD-38 was not one of the most popular road switchers that EMD produced during the late 1960s and into the early 1970s. In April 1970 Penn Central received 35 units from EMD (PC 6925-6959), nearly half of all SD-38's produced. In 1976 all 35 locomotives were passed onto Conrail (CR 6925-6959) and the fleet remained intact until 1997. EMD designed the SD-38 as a slow-speed, short-distance locomotive for heavy haul service. They were locomotives best suited to the slow, heavy work of hump or yard service.

These repaint rosters are my attempt to discover how long a predecessor ran in its original paint scheme and when Conrail painted it blue for the first time. All dates listed are the earliest and latest the unit was seen in that paint scheme. Dates often change as new photos are examined. If I know for certain that a date is the absolute earliest or latest, then I mention this in the notes. This is a constant work in progress aimed at helping those of us who model the transition era get our consists looking reasonably accurate for blue, stenciled, and original paint scheme ratios.
