Check out the "NYC" style number on the short hood and the placement of the "CR" on the sides of the short hood. Roger says that this is the only one he has photos of painted this way, although there might be others.

The first Conrail paint scheme was simply a black engine with the large Conrail spelled out on the side, much like this repaint of a former Penn Central unit is wearing in this photo.

This former Penn Central GP-9B had seen many years of service and was at the end of its life in Rutherford, one of Conrail's major storage yards during the early 1980s. I only wish I took more photos there!
