EMD GP-35: Photos
Conrail Cyclopedia Quality!

This was the first GP-35 that Penn Central purchased and it's still in its livery, though the CR logos have been applied.

In the early 1990s, Conrail had removed this unit's prime mover and all internal equipment so it could be used to stage grade crossing collisions during OLS events. The locomotive was rebuilt in the Juniata shops, where all valuable components, including the horns, were removed. The unit then received a fresh coat of blue and the Operation Lifesaver scheme. On November 10, 1999, Norfolk Southern shipped 2255 to RailRhodes in GA, where it joined other vintage diesels.

The nose of the unit had been damaged and a tarp placed across it. This would make an interesting modeling project!

An easy spotting feature for former NYC GP-35's is the missing dynamic brake blister on the long hood, such as on this unit. Again we have another of the many Conrail paint scheme variations. This unit doesn't have a CR logo on the long hood. It was painted in 1977 like this and lasted without a logo until at least January 1980. Several other GP-35's were like this.

Another former NYC/PC GP-35 with its logo painted out and CR stencils added. All former PC/NYC GP-35's (CR 2371-2399) did not have dynamic brakes. The exception to this is CR 2399, which did have dynamics. All former PC/PRR, EL, and RDG units were equipped with dynamics. Just one way to pick out former NYC units.

Built as an GP-35 demonstrator EMD 1964 in February 1964, Conrail GP-35 2399 (ex-PC 2399, ex-NYC 2399, ex-NYC 6156, ex-EMD 5561, ex-EMD 1964) sits at Collinwood, OH. Roger says, not the best lighting on this unit, but it's the only ex-NYC GP-35 with dynamic brakes because it was a demo unit, so I took it anyway. It would turn out to be the only time I ever saw this unit, so I'm glad I did take the shot.

The black painted on this former Reading Company geep (RDG 3620) has worn off fairly quickly, exposing the old logos and numbers. Now, it wasn't uncommon for crews to carry some paint thinner and remove the black from their favorite locomotives, revealing the old logos underneath. Back in the late 70s, I had one crewman brag to me about how he used to do this. Railfans also liked to pull such pranks. Though this loco looks like simple weather got to its paint. Still, it reminds me of all the tension underlying the merger during the early years.

Even though Conrail kept the Reading GP-35's in the RDG numbering scheme, Conrail paint crews often painted over the old numbers on the long hood. As you can see from other CR-stenciled RDG units on this page, usually the entire number got painted out. But 3626 only got a partial paint job and CR stencil. This unit used to roam eastern PA quite often during the late 1970s.

Another totally bizarre CR-stencil repaint of a former Reading locomotive. Just totally nasty. Also note the unpainted Conrail cab signal box retrofitted onto the short hood. Today many people look back on these stenciled locos with fondness or at least curiosity. But back then, such a sight used to make those of us who grew up with the Reading Company real in horror. Of course, I didn't know even one Conrail modeler in the 70s! Times do change, don't they?

The Reading Company cream-and-green paint is showing through the blue paint. Conrail usually just painted blue over the predecessor colors, making for interesting units like this. Looks like the cab signal box was removed somewhere along the line.

The 3654 began life as RDG 3654 before Conrail painted it blue. Notice that the standard RDG rain gutter above the engineer's cab have been removed from the roof, though you can see where Conrail patched over it. An intersting feature!
