This unit was originally a high-nose geep, LV 304, and had been in a wreck in the 1970's prior to Conrail. The Valley sent it to the Illinois Central Gulf's Paducah shops, where it was repaired in typical Paducah style. It returned to the LV complete with a new low nose and Horscht paper air filter. Until the GP38AC's arrived on the LV in 1972 and 1973, this unit had been the only low-nose EMD locomotive on the Valley.
