EMD GP-18: Photos

Repainted LV 303 looking fairly sharp in its Conrail colors. My memory tells me that these locos stayed for the most part in New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. Check the LV section below for a photo of this unit still in LV colors.

This unit was originally a high-nose geep, LV 304, and had been in a wreck back in the 1970s prior to Conrail. The Valley sent it to the Illinois Central Gulf's Paducah shops, where it was repaired in typical Paducah style. It returned to the LV complete with a new low nose and Horscht paper air filter. Until the GP-38AC's arrived on the LV in 1972 and 1973, this unit had been the only low-nose GM locomotive on the Valley. Thanks go to Rich Stasiak and an anonymous contributor for the info. See the LV section below for a pre-Conrail photo of this unit.

We are exactly one year before Conrail will become reality after years of planning as GP-18 LV 303 and RS-11M 7643. LV 303 would become CR 7497.

Though this photo was taken a few years prior to Conrail, I feel the loco is special enough to be featured here.
