Always sad to see such a graceful locomotive on the deadline. Former DL&W 818. Was to be renumbered CR 4008, but never made it.

Erie Lackawanna E8A #833 will become one of Conrail's elite executive train locomotives and be repainted blue before getting its classic Pullman Green scheme. However, three months into Conrail the E8A is still wearing its full Erie Lackawanna livery, which looks sharp.

CR 4022 was in the middle of this move, with CR 4020 in the lead. CR 4022 died while on an Operation Lifesaver move, which is why they had to add the third unit, CR 4021. An unusual site.

Conrail E8A 4063, a former PC/NYC unit, is surrounded by some "railroad ambiance" as it rests between runs in Chicago, IL, in June 1978. The old roundhouse, the turntable, the wheels, and even the grease on the ground spell railroading the way it used to be in the early days of Conrail.

PC 4325 (former-PC 4080, nee-NYC 4080) was to become CR 4325, but it never got stencils or a repaint. In 1978, it was sold to NJ Transit. It's PC heralds painted out and the circular NJ Transit heralds was applied to the left of the road number on the long hood.
