Dating from 1906, the S2E was the oldest locomotive model on the original 1976 Conrail locomotive roster. Built by Alco and GE as part of the Grand Central Terminal project, these six locomotives stayed close to the New York City area where they could pick up power from the third-rail or overhead wires. By their official retirement in 1982, three of the original six units were still in service. Penn Central #4710 is in Toledo, far from its normal operating area of New York City.

In March 1981, Robert Palmer rode a fan trip that was billed as "farewell to the S Motor" and was scheduled to have the PC 4715 for power. Alas, they couldn't get it running. So they gave it a fresh coat of paint and parked it in the station at Harmon so that everyone could photograph it when the excursion got there. Penn Central #4715 survived on roster for an additional year.
