The first Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 entered service in 1935. The GG1 received its famous style-lines from industrial designer Raymond Loewy and is probably one of the most famous locomotives of the 20th Century. A total of 139 units were constructed in PRR's shops between 1935 and 1944. PRR assigned their GG1's to series 4800-4938, which PC and CR retained. While mostly associated with passenger service on the Northeast Corridor and the old PRR Mainline between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, PA, the GG1 was also a major freight locomotive. Conrail removed all their GG1's from service in 1979 but several lingered on roster for another year at least.
