The E44 was the last locomotive model the Pennsylvania Railroad ordered for its electrified lines, but even by the time they were completed in the early 1960's the electrified lines were doomed for freight. By the time Conrail inherited the electrified lines and the E44's, most of which were operational on Day 1 in 1976, their fate was sealed because most trains on those lines needed diesels to either begin or complete the trains over the non-electrified sections. By 1981, most of the E44's were retired and placed into storage, with Rutherford Yard being one of the major E44 graveyards. Here we see PC 4400 still in its original PC heralds coming into Penn Station in Baltimore.

Another angle of PC 4400 as it passed by Dick Leonhardt. The E44's were equipped with dual control stands, making this the rear engineer side of the locomotive, which is why the engineer is looking backwards and waving.

PC 4411 was turned into CR 4411 simply by painting out the PC heralds with black paint without any CR markings to replace them. Even the number boards are the old PC versions.

It's a year after the formation of Conrail, and PC 4419 is still in its Penn Central livery. It will get repainted, as seen below, before being retired.

CR 4434 has been sitting in the deadline at Rutherford for two years when I shot this photo in 1983. Shortly before the E44's were retired in 1981, I was lucky enough to get a ride on one around the Harrisburg area. As usual, I did not have a camera with me because I used to have to borrow one back then. I did have my huge tape recorder and recorded the entire trip. I also got a ride in a GG1. Sadly, like all my many other tape recordings of early Conrail, it wound up tossed into the trash after my parents' divorce. It was a difficult period of my life, with railfanning being my escape.

It's getting near the end for this E44. In a few months it will be mothballed with every Conrail electric locomotive.
