Ten 4,000hp E40's were built in 1956 for the New Haven for passenger service. PC 4971 and PC 4973-4977 were the only six of the original 10 E40's ordered by the New Haven to survive onto Conrail before they were scrapped in 1977.

Penn Central 4977 was originally New Haven 377, which is pictured below. The unit never got its Conrail numbers, which would have been the same as the PC ones, though CR would have painted out the logos. The red flag in the coupler indicates that the engine saw at least some service before Conrail retired it in late 1977.
