It may look like Conrail slapped on new cab numbers over the Penn Central numbers, but that didn't happen. Penn Central put the stencils on this former Pennsylvania Railroad T-6, and Conrail just left them in place because they would be retiring the unit soon.

Conrail inherited six T-6 locomotives from the Penn Central, which inherited them from the Pennsylvania Railroad. Conrail #9847 got CR stencils on the front nose but nowhere else.
