It may look like Conrail slapped on new numbers over the unit, but that didn't happen. Penn Central put the stencils on, and Conrail just left them since the unit would soon be retired.

Conrail inherited six of these locomotives from the Penn Central, who inherited them from the Pennsylvania. The unit got CR stencils on the front nose but no where else.
