Because all the former Erie Railroad RS-3's were equipped with 6-SL brake systems, they were able to run with only other former Erie Railroad RS-3's and Erie Railroad GP-7's. This alone assured their demise. On the other hand, the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western RS-3's were equipped with the more common 24-RL brake systems, allowing them to run with any other locomotive in the newly formed Conrail. Conrail never bothered to renumber this unit, sending it to the deadline quickly.

The fixed marker lights were a unique feature of the Erie Lackawanna RS-3's. Also, different units had different battery box covers. Again, Conrail quickly deadlined this oddball unit

The Erie Lackawanna paint on this unit looks great. Still, Conrail quickly retired it like most of the other former Erie Railroad RS-3's.

Here is a rare and interesting bird for early Conrail fans. Conrail #5532 is former Penn Central (New York Central) #5332, which was built for passenger service complete with the high air tank on the hood.

The Erie Lackawanna contributed 44 RS-3's to the Conrail roster in 1976. Many of them were renumbered and stenciled for Conrail, yet several did go to their grave wearing their original EL scheme and number. Conrail officially retired this unit in October 1976. However, Erie Lackawanna had already stored many of these units back in January 1976, including Erie Lackawnna #922. Conrail simply moved these units from Erie Lackawanna's Marion deadline to the deadline in Altoona.

Erie and the Lackawanna purchased their RS-3's from ALCo's Schenectady, NY, shops between 1950 and 1953. Later they were transferred to the Erie Lackawanna. By the time Conrail received this unit in 1976, it was already 24 years old. That's old for any locomotive, especially a tempermental ALCo. Erie ordered this unit with a steam generator in the short hood for passenger service. This unit was offically retired in October 1976, but had been deadlined long before that.

The former EL RS-3's were equipped with 12 cylinder 244-series engine rated at 1,600 horsepower. This poor unit is looking ratty and has been ready for the torch since the EL stored it in January 1976.
