It was an overcast, rainy day in 1996 or 1997 when Al took this photo of the famous sign that stood outside Conrail’s Juniata Locomotive Shop. In the October 1977 issue of Trains magazine, there is a picture of this sign in a "Would you believe it?" segment. The locomotive in that article has 2250 in both number boards, which was a GP35 at the time. Here, the number boards read from left to right, 1976 and 1990. (I always thought the conductor-side number board changed with the year, but Al said these photos were from 1996 or 1997. The equipment in the background says more 1990 to me than 1997, but I will leave readers make up their own mind. --Bob Waller)

As well as building and repairing locomotives, Juniata also scrapped them, often using parts from older locomotives to keep newer locomotives operating, which is why Conrail SW9 8924 (former Penn Central/New York Central 8924) has pieces missing.

Little is left of Conrail SW1200 9327. 9327 was purchased by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western in April 1957 as DLW 568 and was the last locomotive delivered before the DL&W merged with the Erie Railroad to form the Erie Lackawanna. It was renumbered as Erie Lackawanna 463 and then Conrail 9327 before being scrapped in the 1990’s. In the background sits Conrail B23-7 1910 in its Quality scheme.

In October 1998, Conrail opened their Juniata Shops to the public during an event called "Railfest." Visitors got a chance to see the last Conrail locomotive that was built there, the standard-cab SD70 which Norfolk Southern had ordered in place of a second SD80MAC order. Kevin photographed the construction process. Here we see a complete long hood assembly for an SD70 as it arrived on a flatbed truck. This hood had been lowered onto the floor recently. Notice how the air intakes had been painted Conrail blue during the pre-assembly stage.

Conrail at Juniata had an entire building devoted to painting locomotives. Not only were Conrail units finished here, but locomotives for many other railroads were finished here. Juniata had a very talented crew, many of whom served under Norfolk Southern we would presume.

In 1977, the Erie Lackawanna Historical Society had their annual meeting in Meadville, PA. The meeting included a tour of the Meadville Shops. Conrail closed the Meadville Car Shops shortly after 1977, deeming it redundant like many other predecessor shops. The work Meadville would have done was transferred to Hollidaysburg, PA. Here we see some Penn Central boxcars under repair. Most likely they would have gotten a coat of Conrail boxcar red, or at least gotten CR stencils.

CR 0 was the remote-control unit used to move locomotives in and out of the Wheel Shop at the Enola Diesel Terminal. They were basically a battery powered EMD truck with 2 traction motors. John says to look for the :-) in the 0. Back in 1998, George Alberti, a machinist hostler at CR's Conway Diesel Terminal, wrote to the CRCyc that Conway also had one of these "things,” as he called them. George saud, "The first time we tried to use it, we were moving a hump slug unit from the servicing pad to the shop. A few years back when they repaired the lead track to the turntable, some genius decided to regrade from the turntable up the lead about 100 feet. A great job BUT they made it a downgrade. Here we came with this little 'bug' and slug. The small air compressor on this thing only generates about 30 pounds of air to brake. Well, we slid all the way across the turntable and stopped with about an inch to spare. Once was enough for our Shop Manager, and this thing has been shoved back on our longest spur and stored there since. I know for me it was a (heck) of a ride and my partner and I still laugh about that move."
