CR B23-7 1942 and CR GP38-2 8065 power the rail train on this trip into Pine Creek Valley on March 27, 1989, to lift another load of rails as Conrail abandoned 66 miles of the Corning Secondary from Wellsboro Junction to Jersey Shore, PA. The very scenic abandoned right-of-way is now the Pine Creek Rail-Trail.

On a rainy Friday afternoon in October, CR SD50 6824 leads CR GP40-2 3367, CR GP40-2 3321, and CR GP30 2212 on the Pittsburgh Line near Petersburg, PA. The westbound train was running the reverse track as the westbound track was out of service for testing by SRS 143.

On a Sunday afternoon, Conrail's Green Leaf Turn with CR 7974 was heading to the Green Leaf fertilizer plant at the end of in-service track at MP 14 of the former Watsontown-Berwick Secondary. This vehicle crossed the track well in advance of the 5 mph train entering the crossing at Watsontown Industrial Track in Strawberry Ridge, PA, on September 21, 1980.

A Speno grinding train pulled by CR SD45 6120 works east to Pennsylvania, Power & Light’s Montour Steam Electric Station at Strawberry Ridge, PA. This is the first time I ever observed a 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive as well as a grinding train working on the Watsontown Secondary.

The following three shots were all taken the same day, October 17, 1996. The day started out foggy, which is not necessarily a bad thing, and then cleared off nicely later in the morning. The first shot shows eastbound SEBO with CR SD80MAC 4120 boring through the fog near MP 68 in Brookfield, MA.

Another series of three photos, all SD80MAC's, taken the same cold day, January 28, 1997. First is BOEL with CR 4117 exiting the big cut at Washington depot in Washington, MA. at 07:44. Note the "artwork" on the relay cabinet at right. Some CR "wag" named the private crossing at this location the "Cat Lady crossing" in memory of an old lady who once lived across the road from here and had a LOT 'o CATS! I know because I remember her and the cats, too.

The next pair of photos are the same photo. I just did a cropped version for a closer look at the headend and a nearly full-frame version. This is a late-running TV-6 with CR 6786 just past MP 139 in Hinsdale, approaching the "Top 'o the B&A," around 2:00pm on January 28, 1997. This pair of SD50's was unusual for the old Boston & Albany at this time.

This next pair are a cropped version and a nearly full-frame version. The train is once-a-week TV-99 with CR 6759 running along Muddy Pond in Washington, MA, just west of MP 138 on January 29, 1997. The "interesting" thing about this photo(s) is the "interest" shown by the engineer, as he checks out the photographer--ME!--with a pair of binoculars. Mind your own business, Bub, and pay attention to your train handling!

This shot is NHSE with CR 6612 working upgrade at MP 129 in Becket, MA. on May 10, 1985. CR 6612 was less than a year old at the time, and, for some esoteric reason, I had "adopted" it as a favorite of mine. Maybe it was something to do with the number 6612 (6+6=12?!). When it was rebuilt after a collision near Philadelphia, PA, in 1987, and got a "facelift" with the flat-topped roof and slightly different nose from the C40-8's, I definitely was on the lookout for it.

Here is SEBO with a pair of SD80MAC’s, CR 4125 and CR 4113, crossing the east branch of the Westfield River at MP 119 in Huntington, MA on May 8, 1997. This is the confluence of the east and west branches, with the west branch coming in right at the left side of the photo, and it is the west branch that the railroad follows up into the Berkshire hills.

Conrail's ex-PC GP40 3199 leads a UFS train of empty PPLX hoppers under PA Route 147 (now I-180) near McEwensville, PA, on June 18, 1976, on Conrail's Watsontown-Berwick Secondary. With 25 miles of this line taken out of service in 1978, this portion of track became the Watsontown Secondary.

"Strangers in a strange land"? Well, "Gillfud" may be considered "strange" by some, but ConRail power going for jaunts on the B&M was common. This set, led by the first unit of CR's last order of GP-40-2's, the 3389, is at East Deerfield, MA, on January 26, 1985. They may have come east on a Bow coal train but are getting ready to take an EDME-X back west.

Our first encounter with the fairly new, at the time, GE B36-7's occurred on February 10, 1984 in Hinsdale, MA. Eastbound TV-14X, led by the 5045, was stabbed at the Hinsdale crossovers for an opposing train, as one track on the east slope of Washington Hill was out of service. As the railroad was still ABS signal rules and a TBO was controlling the hand-throw switches and handing up orders to trains running against the flow, it didn't matter that the train stopped "in advance" of the block signal seen in the photo.

In the summer of 1978 a line-up of cabooses in the Hartford, CT. yard includes an ex Pennsy van assigned to work train service, CR 46131R. Two transfer vans, still PC Jade green, the 18488 and 18394, and one painted into the blue CR livery, the 18255.

NHSE working up the east slope of Washington hill at the "new location," between MP 129 and MP 130 on July 21, 1984. So-called because the NYC&HRRR, which leased the B&A in 1900, did a major re-route in this area in 1912. Among other work performed in 1912 to upgrade the B&A, was the opening of the second, and larger bore at State Line tunnel in Canaan, NY. Consecutively numbered SD45-2's 6662, 6661, and 6660 lead "class unit" C30-7 6600 in the lash-up.
