Most of these signals are no more since Norfolk Southern has made the Harrisburg Line bi-directional. These signals spoke of the Reading Company and then Conrail. Another small piece of the railroad gone forever. We're farther east on the line in Myerstown, PA on July 18, 1998. A simple RDG block signal guards the westbound track.

Westbound TVLA is running late as is passes through the crossover at Sheridan, PA (Harrisburg Line) on June 6, 1998. TVLA was a cross-country intermodal that ended in Los Angeles, CA. The crossing used to be manually controlled by a special operator who had to be called out to operate it. This was the only crossover between here and Wyomissing to the east. Sheridan's was the opposite of Wyomissing's. An operational nightmare when traffic was heavy, and trains had to run opposite.

Conrail was famous for foreign power nearly everywhere on its system. Name any major North American railroad and odds on that it had locomotives running across Conrail tracks. Canadian Pacific had regular run-through service from Philadelphia to Allentown and points north to the old Delaware & Hudson, which they owned. Conrail symbol "D&H556" is heading toward Philly at CP Belt in September 1996. Leading are SD40-2 CP 5429, leased NS C30-7 8063, and CP SD40-2 5677 with its US flag painted out.

Roger says, it's only a few months into Conrail, and some operations still look like the old way. Witness a quartet of PC F's on this CR local in Akron, Ohio. First the train (AMA-1), then the F's, then the track (ex-PC), and finally Conrail itself would be history in this town. I watch ex-Conrail units going by on CSX now--wishing we could have seen "pure" (before split) sets of modern Conrail power blasting west on the old Erie, or south on the old PC.

Here is a little "early blue" to look at from the Youngstown, Ohio area. This is the former Erie Brier Hill yard, a good place to find Alco power in Conrail's first few years. The trailing Alco C-425 is an ex-New Haven unit and is running out its last few months at this location. It would be renumbered 5087 by year's end and retired soon after. The GP10 would work well into the 80's. Today, most tracks here are gone, replaced by a junk auto recycle business. What does remain is operated by the Ohio Central System, and there are usually a couple of units around.

These were the days when Conrail was one funky railroad to railfan. You either loved it for all the variety or loathed it for destroying your favorite railroads. Passing through Red Bank, NJ is ER-2 lead by CR 7163 and followed by xCNJ 1522 GP7 in the Coast Guard scheme, and two xCNJ RS-3's.

Back in the 1970's, the Bethlehem roundhouse was busy with old Lehigh Valley ALCo’s, Reading Company SD45’s, and many oddball locomotives from the “good old days.” By the 1990’s, Conrail abandoned the facility. This is what it looked like in 1997.

On the same day as the photo above, Stirling also shot an overhead view of the east end of Allentown hump yard in November 1997. It's a great snapshot of Conrail at the time. Notice how little actual Conrail freight is there. Of course, a lot came off the Canadian National down the old Lehigh River Line and then got sorted here.
