A classic scene on The Curve during the early transition years of Conrail as three GP-38-2's (xPC 8088, CR 8089, xPC 8012) make their way though the scene. The hastily painted-out Penn Central logos on 8088 now look as if they never had been obliterated with black paint. This was the peak of rainbow days!

A little pre-Conrail history. Russ took the picture of RS-3 PC 5298 in Washington, DC on December 8, 1973 and just made the first print of it from his 32 year-old negative. You can't even tell it's a Penn Central unit, until you notice the "worms in love" logo on the front through the window of the former electric commuter car it's coupled to.

Grab shots sometimes come out better than those we plan. Such was the case back on November 12, 1998 at Dauphin, PA. Craig caught the locos at the crossing at the last moment.

It is only two months after the Conrail merger as two untouched Erie Lackawanna units thunder through Tuxedo, NY on June 23, 1976 with a mixed train of autoracks and general merchandise.

During the mid-1970s, Bicentenial fever swept across the nation. Looking to improve public relations and employee morale, many railroads repainted special locomotives into patriotic schemes. It seems odd that the Erie Lackawanna would take the trouble to repaint a locomotive, considering that it was to become a part of Conrail before the 1976 Bicentenial celebrations would take place. However, you must keep in mind that originally the EL was not to be part of Conrail, and that the FRA folded into into Conrail rather late in the game. So why not repaint a locomotive? Croxton, NJ. March 1977.
