Here we see TV-5 leaving Beacon Park Yard in Boston, MA in the late 1970s. Conrail's new GP-40-2's, doing what Conrail purchased them to do, look fantastic in the setting sun.

When they took over the Monongahela in May 1993, Conrail inherited MGA's S23-7B "Super-7's" (MGA 2300-2310). Starting that very month, Conrail began upgrading the units to B30-7R's and repainting them into the Quality scheme. Here we see MGA 2300 prior to rebuilding leading a freight up the street in West Brownsville, PA during Labor Day Weekend 1991.

We railfans tend to overlook the minor details that bring a railroad to life, such as signs. Here we see the sign greeting employees as they enter the yard in Allentown, PA in 1998.

Harry was an EL man through and through, and often helped the CRCyc during the early days. Harry passed away a few years ago, but his memory still lives on here. He took this shot of HO tower at Horseheads, NY on a chilly autumn day in 1976.

You will never be able to get a shot at the famous Gallitzin tunnels like this ever again. Though John took this shot on July 1, 1979, I would repeat the same set up from the same spot almost a year later. A former Penn Central SD-35, CR 6031, is heading westbound while a couple of friendly railfans watch in amazement. Do you now understand why we love Conrail during the 1970s so much?

This is an awesome scene back when railfanning Conrail was so much fun! Camping out trackside at MP-241 just east of Horseshoe Curve in July 1980.

Back in the 1970's, the Bethlehem roundhouse was busy with old LV ALCos, RDG SD-45s, and all sorts of oddball locomotives from the good old days. By the 1990s, Conrail abandoned the facility. This is what it looked like as of November 1997.

On the same day as the photo above, Stirling also shot an overhead view of the east end of Allentown hump yard in November 1997. It's a great snapshot of Conrail at the time. Notice how little actual CR freight is there. Of course, a lot came off the CN down the old Lehigh River line and then got sorted here.
