Another goodie from the early days of Conrail. PC 6270 (SD-40) and LV 506 (U23B) are sitting on the west leg of the wye at Hudson, Ohio in November 1976. Neither unit has been restenciled, but that ex PC cabin car going by over on the main is already blue. Just a note from, this photo is large enough to make a great 800x600 wallpaper image and has already spent some time on my home monitor; I do love Roger's photos!

Train CIME pauses at South St. TBS in Akron, Ohio. Bangor & Aroostook 86 (GP-38) helps out xPC 3157 (GP-40) and another xPC unit in this Sept 1979 view. (A quick note: BAR 86 made the rounds around the Northeast, from Ohio to Pennsylvania.)

Here is a little "early blue" to look at from the Youngstown, Ohio area. This is the former Erie Brier Hill yard, a good place to find Alco power in Conrail's first few years. The trailing Alco C-425 is an ex-New Haven unit and is running out its last few months at this location. It would be renumbered 5087 by year's end and retired soon after. The GP-10 would work well into the 80's. Today, most tracks here are gone, replaced by a junk auto recycle business. What does remain is operated by the Ohio Central System, and there are usually a couple of units around.

A grab shot on the Northeast Corridor at Newark, NJ in June of 1977 (note the former LV line to Oak Island above the units). It shows that some of the PC Alco S-2's ran for a while early on in Conrail. These small shifters also worked in Buffalo, along with some Alco RS-1's no less.

A classic Winter day, a rare former-Lehigh Valley GP-38AC (CR 7658) leads a general merchandise train on the old Erie Lackawanna mainline in March 1978 at Rittman, OH. Conrail owned only four LV GP-38AC's, so they were a treat to shoot no matter what the weather.
