EMD SD Magazine Articles
Conrail Cyclopedia Quality!

  • "Diesels, One-Detail-At-A-Time: EMD SD-90MAC as CSX 801, CR 4100," Louis Marre. Railmodel Journal. Sept 02, 46+.
Superdetailing the SD-80MAC. They got the loco class wrong!

  • "Modeling SD-80MAC and SD-90MAC Diesels in HO Scale," Russ Goodwin. Model Railroader. Oct 98, 64-69.
A decent article on creating an SD-80MAC using an RRP SD-90MAC shell. There are a few oversights, as mentioned above.
    • CR 4104, 4106

  • "Diesel Detail: EMD SD-80MAC As Conrail 4101 And 4109." Railmodel Journal. July 98, 54-56.
Typical brief prototype overview, detail list, and paint list. Some tips for the RPP SD-90MAC shell, but the author forgets that the rear of the SD-90MAC shell and the SD-80MAC are different; therefore, details for the rear of the loco are totally overlooked! B&w photos.
    • CR 4101, 4109

  • "Diesel Detail: Conrail (CR) SD-80MAC," Rich Picariello. Model Railroading. Dec 97, 55-57.
Usual brief proto info. Some modeling tips. Paint, decal, and detail list.
    • CR 4104 nose/front/rear, 4107 rear

  • "EMD SD-80MAC: 5,000 Horses Running Wild On Big Blue," Jeff Capps. Model Railroader. April 97, 88-92.
A nice overview of the prototype and technical details. The greatest asset is the HO scale drawings of CR 4100. There is no mention of the Rail Power Products SD-90MAC shell. Don't look for modeling tips in this article. Of note are two good detail shots and one good roster shot. There are some errors on the drawing and the text, check above for details.
    • CR 4119 roster, 4126 detail shots of rear and conductor's cab area.

  • "The SD-80MAC," Ed Ryan, Ken Goslett, Eric Neubauer. Railroad Model Craftsman. April 97, 61-66.
An overview of the prototype, with HO scale drawings. I feel the photos are questionable for modeling purposes, either too dark or too severe an angle. The text is great, but some minor errors do exist in the drawings.
    • CR 4103, 4107, 4111, 4121 elevated cab shot, 4123

  • "Review: Rail Power Products SD-90MAC." Railroad Model Craftsman. Nov 97, 92+.
Gives good instructions for assembling the kit, useful for the SD-80MAC conversion, plus some brief info on making an SD-80MAC.

  • "Diesel Detail: Spartan Cab EMD SD-70 Diesels," Scott Chatfield. Railmodel Journal. Dec 02, 40+.
    Superdetailing the Athearn model.

  • "Conrail/Norfolk Southern SD-70s," Paul K. Withers. Diesel Era. Jan/Feb 99, 26-34.
Detailed prototype article, with drawings. Many color and b&w photos, plus detail shots.

  • "Modeling Conrail's SD-60I," Frank Cicero. Railroad Model Craftsman. May 99, 48-52.
Uses a Rail Power Products SD-60m shell with SD-90MAC cab and nose for an nice HO model.
    • CR 5654, 5599, 5630

  • "Conrail's Juniata-built SD-60Is," Dan Cupper. Diesel Era. March/April 1995, 30-33.
Deals with how the program came to be, how the locomotives are built, and the production of the first unit. Good shots of the locos under construction are given. This is not the usual nuts-and-bolts DE locomotive article, but a good read.

  • "Diesel Detail: General Motors Division (GMDD) Conrail (CR) SD-60M," Rich Picariello. Model Railroading. June 94, 53-55.
Typical detail article for HO, though the RPP shell.
    • CR 5501, 5505, 5505, 5534, 5551

  • "Kitbashing A Conrail SD-60M," Denis Doucet. Railroad Model Craftsman. Dec 93, 64-72.
Uses a Rail Power Products shell and chassis with Athearn motor to create an SD-60M in HO scale. The instruction are sketchy at best, so you'll need to know how to read between the lines. Author chose CR 5507 to model. He fails to take into account the recessed cooling fans on the rear of the long hood.

  • "Conrail's New SD-60Ms," Diesel Era Staff. Diesel Era. May/June 93, 28-30.
Brief article on the locomotive. Many detail photos.
    • CR 5502, 5504, plus details

  • "From SD-60 To SD-60M: Nine Years Of Change At EMD," Ken Goslett, Eric Neubauer. Railroad Model Craftsman. Dec 93, 66-72.
A prototype overview of the SD-60M. HO scale drawings are for Conrail's final order, with specific info on the differences between the CR units and a stock SD-60M. The detail shots of the roof are great! A real Conrail article.
    • CR 5525 color, 5556 b&w, 5558 b&w, detail shots b&w

  • "Diesel Detail: EMD SD-60 As Conrail 6845 And 6853." Railmodel Journal. Sept 99, 18-19.

  • "SD-50 and SD-50 Diesels: From Proto2000 in HO Scale and From Atlas in N Scale," D. Scott Chatfield. Railmodel Journal. Oct 00, 8+.

    • CR 6760 nose b&w

  • "Modeling an HO Erie Lackawanna SDP-45: Pt 1," Andy Harman. Railroad Model Craftsman. March 99, 65-71.
Andy has decided to do the ultimate SDP-45 model. This is only for the most experienced modelers!
    • EL 3667, 3668

  • "Modeling Erie Lackawanna's SDP-45," Mark Sharp. Model Railroading. Jan 98, 58-65.
A major modification. Some prototype background. Starts with a Rail Power Products SD-45 shell. The standard by which all SDP-45's will be judged. If you do not want to get into all the chopping that Mark did, the other articles below are good choices.
    • EL 3643, 3636, 3639, 3637, 3638 Bicentennial, 3660, 3657
    • VMV (xCR) 6694

  • "New Life For An Old Friend: Renovating A Conrail SDP-45," Jim Six. PM. Mar/Apr 89, 28-31.
Yet another SDP-45 article. Some good proto info in Jim Six style. Again, not as good as Mark Sharp's article. I do like Jim's weathering.
    • CR 6682, 6693

  • "EL's Best Became Conrail's Biggest: SDP-45," PM Staff. PM. Jan/Feb 85, 26-33.
Some basic prototype information about the EL units plus how to model it using GSB shells. The article is very dated. I can't see any article being better than Mark Sharp's. Some nice photos.
    • EL 3638, 3644, and details
    • CR 6682

  • "Building An Erie Lackawanna SDP-45." Railroad Model Craftsman. Dec 81, 63-na.
Since the Mark Sharp MRG SDP-45 article above, this one has become dated. This article uses the old Athearn shell and mechanism.

  • "Conrail's Original Beast--The SD-45-2," Dan Bourque. Railroad Model Craftsman. March 2000, 52-58.
A good modeling article with an unusally generous amount of prototype information. Uses a Rail Power Products SD-45-2 shell and Cannon & Company parts. Creates a good model. I disagree with his choice of number board decals--they don't match the prototype. I haven't bothered to check if a closer match is available. This is a minor quibble compared to the overall model. Chose CR 6661 to model.
    • CR 6655, 6660, 6663 b&w photos

  • "Diesel Detail: EMD SD-45-2 as Erie Lackawanna 3679." Railmodel Journal. Dec 94, 30-31.

Usual brief proto info. Paint, decal, and detail list.
    • EL 802

  • "Pennsylvania Railroad SD-45s," Paul K. Withers. Diesel Era. July/Aug 95, 19-30.
Covers the evolution of six-axle power on the PRR, with many photos of other types of locos. Then gets into the SD-45 and covers it through the PC years. CR years barely mentioned. Excellent through early CR. Roster.
    • PRR 6105, 6108, 6110, 6144, 6115, 6127, 6138, 6150, 6163, 6185, 6200, 6202, 6214
    • PC 6116, 6122, 6145, 6192, 6205, 6220, 6238

  • "Modeling A Reading SD-45 In HO Scale," Bill Gruber. Railroad Model Craftsman. April 93, 54-56.
Uses a Rail Power Products shell and builds the extended cab of the Reading units. Can be applied to former RDG units on Conrail. Same technique for building cab can be used for former-PRSL GP-38s.
    • RDG 7603 color

  • "Conrail's Cresson Helper Pool--Part 2: The SD-45 and How to Model It," Jim Six. Model Railroading. May 92, 24+.

  • "Diesel Detail: EMD SD-40-2 as Conrail 6391." Model Railroading. Aug 87, 47.
A bit dated, but still a decent start for detailing. Overhead view photo is nice but a bit murky for b&w.
    • CR 6391 b&w

  • "Modeling Pennsylvania And Penn Central SD-40s: Detailing the Kato SD-40--Expert Skills Not Required," Jim Six. Model Railroading. Sept 93, 52-57.
