May 1994 was a time of transition for Conrail, which had been on a major motive power buying spree while retiring the last of its aging locomotives. Though 35 GP40's were on roster as of May 10, within several months only one GP40 (CR 3274) would remain active. Several weeks after May 1994, the last GP35's would also leave Conrail's roster forever. The same would happen to the remaining two GP30's. Other locomotive models that would leave the roster in 1994 include all remaining SW9's and SW1200's, in addition to all SW900's except CR 8946. All these models remained on roster as of May 10, 1994.One of the models responsible for clearing out much of Conrail's roster was GE's C40-8W. In August 1993, Conrail's third of the model had arrived on property, replacing many aging SD40's. As of May 1994, the fourth and final order of the C40-8W's would not arrive until the following month, when it would kill off the remaining SD40s, which Conrail would sell off or return to EMD, which in turn put them into their own leasing company or further sold them off to leasing arms such as Helm. Then in October 1994, Conrail's own LMS leasing arm would begin and the first LMS C40-8W's would arrive. Finally, in December 1994 the first SD60I's would roll out of Juniata and onto the roster. So as you can see, this May 10, 1994 represents the practical end of an era for Conrail. It was the last time several models would remain on a Conrail roster as the railroad transitioned into its final years of operation. Because a unit is listed in the roster does not mean that it was in active service, just that Conrail still considered it active and available. For detailed roster information about a particular unit, such as built date, see the unit's respective model page.
