EMD introduced the SW-1200 in 1954 as the successor to the SW-900. Between 1959 and 1963, EMD began rebuilding the Reading Company's aging Baldwin VO1000's into these new improved switchers. While the Reading classed them as VO1000M's, Conrail classed them as SW-1200M's. EMD reused the following parts of the VO1000's on the new locomotives: main generator, auxiliary generator, batteries, trucks, frame, cab, horn, and bell.Comprehensive Roster (Download Print Versions: | Text | Pdf ) The roster below is comprehensive for these units between April 1976 and May 1999, and contains all predecessor units of the locomotive class that Conrail inherited as well as those Conrail purchased. If numbers are missing from the roster, Conrail intentionally left them open. It does not contain retirement dates and dispositions due to their complex nature.
