A sole SD-80MAC pulling an intermodal was a rare sight, especially in 1996, when CR usually ran them in pairs.

One of CR's SD-80MACs when new on property hauling an empty PPLX unit coal train. A year later, the number decals were already pealing off some of these units! Paired with CR 4120.

CR 4104 was the trailing unit with CR 4122 powering westbound empty coal drag XSH to Shire Oaks. These were monster units. I still remember the first time seeing one. And I thought the SD-40-2's were large back in 1970s! The battleships of Conrail's fleet. Shame they couldn't order more.

Bradley says: I had the pleasure of working for Electro-Motive Division while (hiding the fact) being a life long railfan. It's not cool to be a "foamer" when you are at EMD or on the railroad, so I went into the closet or undercover. In 9/98 I left EMD, and my wife and I moved to Arizona, where I started a career in computer networking.
My family history goes back to Hornell, NY, a key hub of the Erie. Having had family work for Erie Lakawanna / Conrail, getting the assignment in December of 1995 to go to Altoona to deliver the SD-80MAC's was a dream come true. I was a Field Engineer and was assigned to new locomotive orders to test, ride, troubleshoot, and train the railroad on the new units.
Reading your story took me back to the days watching the units roll out of the paint shop and working with the Conrail test engineers. We would take each new pair on test runs over the mountain to Cresson where they would receive fuel and sand, then be assigned to helper duty. The units were then released to revenue service on ATPI and PIAT before being set loose on the railroad. Those were long sleepless nights...
In the picture, left to right, are Barry Wertz, Conrail Locomotive Test Manager, Steve Anderson, Seimens Engineer, and me. This is at the Cresson engine house. CR 4104 and 4102 were released together on February 3rd.
