Conrail SD-50 Tips by Bob Waller
The SD-50 was an interim locomotive design, a step up in performance and efficiency from the SD-40-2 but not quite as good as the SD-60. Conrail purchased a total of 135 units between 1983 and 1986, making them the second largest owner of the model next to CSX, which ordered a total of 144 units.Atlas released their SD-50 during mid-1999 but didn't make any predecorated in Conrail. I guess they had been doing so many CR locos they felt they needed to give some other roads a try. As if N scale CR modelers would pass these up! Still, painting an SD-50 in Conrail colors is no more difficult than painting any other Conrail locomotive. If you model CR during the Quality years, CR 6756 would be a good unit to choose since it had standard class lights applied when being repainted into the Quality scheme. The Atlas model has the standard class lights, unlike all of CR's SD-50's which had the FRA-approved 'bug eye' version. Exactly what detail parts to apply, I haven't checked into this yet. Con-Cor had made an SD-50 that is out-of-production but might be found at a swap meet. Photos for personal use only. All rights reserved by original owner of image.
