Conrail SD-38 Tips by Trainman1984
Conrail SD-38 Below are some general modeling tips on how to construct a Conrail SD-38 using off the shelf Athearn parts for the hood and chassis, plus other detail parts to bring the model to life. If you would like to give the author some feedback, you can email him at Trainman1984@aol.com.

First, take the GP-38-2 shell and cut off the front portion of the shell as shown in the photo below and to the right. Next, cut off the back porch of the shell beginning at the first hood door. Then do the same with the SD-40-2 shell, making the same cuts in the same places as on the GP-38-2 shell. When done cutting and test-fitting, glue the SD-40-2 parts to the GP-38-2 body. Detail it to your desired level.

Front The last step is to put the shell on the chassis. The chassie used is from an Athearn SD-45, which is the standard length frame for an SD-38. First, cut the coupler pockets on the chassis to that you can body-mount the couplers. For this you'll need the styrene. Cut eight square blocks 1/4" by 1/4" or smaller, depending on how big you want the sheets. You could also use an Atlas SD-35 chassis; however, you will have to figure out for yourself how to modify it to fit the Athearn shells.

Below are some photos of the various models built using this method along with a parts list.
