This angle clearly shows what a Phase I class light looks like along with the headlight assembly. Of course the cab signal box on the engineer side of the nose is a Conrail addition to the unit, but other than that the locomotive changed little since the Reading Company owned it.

If you were the engineer standing behind your chair, this would be your view of the cab and control stand. Notice the locomotive number painted on the stand, a common practice in locomotives. To the left are your brake controls, one for the locomotive the other for the entire train. On the right is the throttle and direction lever. Unlike automobiles, locomotives run in 'notches.' So you put the engine in forward, then open the throttle to notch one. You speed will then depend on how heavy your train is and how much horsepower you have.

The nose on a Phase II unit is 88" long from front to back, whereas the nose on a Phase I unit is merely 81". While some modelers have no problem with this, it is noticable in the larger scales such as HO and O. Plus this shot also clearly shows every detail you need on the front engineer side of the locomotive.

We're looking right down the nose of the unit, a shot that can help you select details for your model. The class lights are still the same as those on the Phase I nose.

Thank you, Wes, for showing us how the cab signal box is hooked up to the short hood! I think we can model this piping.

A great detail shot of an FRA-approved class light on a Phase 3 unit. These are the beasties that give Conrail modelers fits.

CR 3399, pictured here, is a Phase III unit Conrail purchased in February 1980, whereas CR 3393, pictured below, is also a Phase III unit Conrail purchased in January 1980. However, both units have different class light mounts on the rear hood. On these units the class lights are mounted much like on the nose, except that they have a hood-like bracket around the light. The photo directly below is a close up of this feature.

CR 3393 was built only one month earlier than 3399 above, but it appears that EMD introduced a phase variation. 3386-3393 was the first order of GP-40-2s to arrive on Conrail and appear to have this notched-hood version of the class light mount, whereas 3394-3403 was the second and final order of Phase III units, as pictured above. Could we then call the first batch Phase IIIa units and the second batch Phase IIIb units?

Kind of the view from the Big Chair here. Of course we're looking backward at a freight car, so we'll imagine that we are pushing the car down a siding. Now you know why engineers lean out the window during such moves!

Now you know why I never liked to 'go' while on a locomotive! Yep, I had to do that one day while a loco was in motion. A very moving experience. A good railroader learns where all the best restrooms are along the line. They also learn where all the McDonalds are, but that is another photo.
