HTg Hoppers: N Scale Modeling
Reading Company HTg Tips
by Bob Waller
Several months prior to the formation of Conrail, the Reading Company constructed their final group of hoppers. The HTg hoppers were assembled from prefabricated kits supplied by Bethlehem Steel Car. These 45-foot, 12-panel, triple-bay hoppers had a cubic capacity of 3,487 feet and rode on flat-top Barber S-2 trucks with 36" wheels.
Atlas makes a car that can be used as a stand-in for this model. The end panel are too steep on the model, plus it has full height ladders. The ladders can always be modified, but the slope sheets are fixed in place. You will have to decide if this is something you can live with. Most N scale modelers are good at accepting major compromises, myself included. Plus there currently are no N scale decals available.
