H43 Hoppers: Photos
Conrail Cyclopedia Quality!

12-Panel triple hopper. It began in PRR paint, then went to PC paint, and then to Conrail paint. In HO scale, use the Bowser models for the H43 class. If in N scale, use the Atlas model.

45' 12-panel, triple hopper. 3433 cuft. Built by Bethlehem Steel (BSC) 1971-72. Still in PC black and numbers, but the PC been replaced with a nasty looking CR. Modeling the H43D is more difficult because the side ladders, which the model has, have been replaced with grab irons on this class. Using the Boweser model, shave off the ladders and replace them with individual grabs.

The prototype H43D were equipped with side grab irons and Wine single door locks, for those who are into such details..

This hopper has an interesting paint scheme because the reporting marks go across the top cord of the car. Most likely this happened because the car had been repainted early into Conrail before ideas were completely set. The repaint date on this car is 8-76.

Penn Central:

45' 12-panel, triple hopper. 3433 cuft. Built by Bethlehem Steel (BSC). Prototype equipped with side grab irons and Wine single door locks. Using photo, shave ladder off and install grabs for very accurate model. Note the CR-style '36' that has been repainted, which clearly marks this car in the CR-era.

The photo is a bit blurred because it was a grab shot. Not many PC cars were running in the late 1990s, and those that were tended be be abused.
