HE7A Hoppers: Atlas N
The HE7A was the final order of hoppers that Erie Lackawanna ordered prior to the Conrail merger in 1976. In May 1974, Greenville Steel Car delivered a total of 750 of these 70-ton, 12-panel, 3-bay hoppers.
While just as in HO scale, there isn't an exact model of an Erie Lackawanna or Conrail HE7A, but Atlas does make a fairly close model of a 70-ton, 12-panel, 3-bay hopper predecorated for Erie Lackawanna. The slope sheets and end panels are different than from the prototype HE7A, but the model does have full height ladders. For a discussion about slope sheets and end panels, see the HO Modeling page. All the model really needs is some good weathering. Unfortunately, Atlas only has done 2 road numbers for these models so you'll have to figure out how to change the reporting marks if you want more cars. And that is about it for the N scale version. Happy modeling.
