Coil Steel: Other CR Classes

|

This is the only G41A I've ever seen painted in this black paint with Quality markings. No class markings. Paint was fresh the day I spotted it. Reporting marks are stenciled.

John tells me that the G40 was a prototype car and one of a kind. It is
similar to the G41's but is longer by one bay (7 vs 6). So this car is quite a find.

Gondolas were often used in coil steel service. Trains that commonly hauled coil steel, such as PIMO, often had a variety of such gondolas. Due to the steel's weight only two or four coils could be loaded, one or two over each truck where the car could better support them without bending. More modeling information is needed about this class of coil car.

The 1977 ORER says this is class G36M coil steel gondola, but the class on the car is G42B. Such cars did not always have the hoods on them. More modeling information is needed about this class of coil car, though no ready to run kit is available.

Here is another view of the same class but on a brigher day. Modeling this class would be a major job in any scale.

Former Erie Lackawanna cars. An interesting coil car. My guess is that the EL experimented with the beam to better distribute the weight, but it seems the beams would make the cars more costly and time consuming to construct. That's probably why this design didn't catch on in the industry.

As you can see by now, Conrail owned a number of converted gondolas for coil service, such as this stunty G42C. Unfortunately, there are no available models of this class in any scale.

Erie Lackawanna ordered 175 of the GE52 class of coil car from Greenville in 1967-1969. It's basically a flatcar with a coil cradle attached. I have no idea what company owns the yellow hood. Perhaps CNW?

An interesting pair of hoods. NS hoods on a CR F50 was not uncommon even before the 1999 merger. However, the black CR hood definately marks this as a post 1999 photo since CR never painted their hoods black--only NS did. Note the G52A markings on the left-hand hood.
