Conrail Cyclopedia X71 Boxcars: Photos Conrail repainted this car but decided to keep the PC's reporting marks, which Athearn picked up on for their HO model of this boxcar type. Location: York, PA   1981 Series: PCA 160000-166999 Photo Revised: June 2, 2005 PCA 166671 X71 Tom Wolfgang (51K) This car has been sitting in the NYS&W Uttica Shops yard with the rest of the NYS&W junk cars, ballast cars, and passenger cars. The yellow door means the car was assigned to 'clean lading service,' which meant it could be used in service where the car had to be clean inside. This often involed but was not restricted to paper service. Other classes that qualified for clean lading were the X74, X75, and BA50A (Raritan River boxcars). Location: Uttica, NY   10-27-98 Photo Revised: June 2, 2005 CR 166754 X71 Shawn Noe (34K) Lon Godshall, our defacto rolling stock editor, reports that Athearn's HO version of their Railbox 50' boxcar kit closely fits the X71. We'll have more on this class and how to model it in the near future. Location: Berea, OH   6-93 Photo Online:August 9, 2001 CR 166863 X71 Mike Rose (78K) Dane Ridenour says that the X71 looks very similar, if not exactly, also like the Accurail (formerly McKean) 50' outside braced boxcar (5600 series). Atlas has also made this in HO scale, their ACF Precision Design car. Click here for a photo of it, though it doesn't have the yellow door. This car was repainted into the Conrail scheme 12-87.
