X58 Boxcars: Rail Yard Models HO
Conrail Cyclopedia Quality!

Click for larger image - 84k (Photo courtesy Rail Yard Models) The new X58 HO scale craftsman kits from Rail Yard Models have recently arrived and are exactly what the HO modeler needs. According to the Rail Yard Models website, a craftsman kit is not a "shake the box" model that goes together in a few hours. These models usually are composed of many parts, details and some times raw materials such as brass wire or structural shapes. The benefit of this is that you will have a very detailed model, comparable to or better than brass in most cases. In addition, the assembly process gives advanced modelers places to make modifications to produce spectacular results, or even model different prototypes.

These are not your typical styrene plastic kits from manufacturers like Athearn or Atlas. All Rail Yard Models kits are made with urethane and etched brass parts. A common casting material in other modeling hobbies, such as military and science fiction where "garage" manufacturers are more common, urethane is just making its way to model railroad kits. Like Rail Yard Models says, urethane can be cut, filed, drilled, and sanded quite easily with the same tools used when working with styrene. While I have not personally built any RYM kits, though I have assembled urethane kits from other manufacturers, other modelers I have spoken to have built the RYM kits and have been very pleased with the results. You can find more information about working with these kits at the Rail Yard Models website.

From the Rail Yard Model wesbite: Features of the Rail Yard Models X58 include a highly detailed single piece body casting with separate roof. Lehigh Valley and Penn Central parts cars will be cast in white plastic to ease paint coverage. Detail parts are included to model cars with either the Hydra-Cushion or Keystone cushion underframe. Etched metal parts are included to model the end ladders, brake platforms, underframe brake details and roof walks for the PRR & LV cars. As with our other kits, these will include trucks with semi-scale metal wheels, decals and brake details. Full color assembly instructions and prototype history are provided on a mini CD-ROM.

If you are a serious modeler, you owe it to yourself to check out these kits. While a bit on the expensive side when compared to offerings from Atlas and Athearn, the Rail Yard Models kits are worth every penny for their accuracy and detail.
