If modeling this car class in HO scale, the Branchline Trains 1000 series 50' AAR boxcar should be close, if not accurate, though you will need the tabbed side sill version. More prototype information is needed about this class of boxcar.
Location: Rutherford, PA   1-12-89
HO Models: Branchline Trains 1000 series 50' AAR boxcar will soon be available and should be close if not accurate for this class. You would need the tabbed side sill version. No EL in this scheme has been announced.

Lehigh Valley:

Updated this info thanks to Gene Fusco at Rail Yard Models. He writes that this is not an X58. The LV X58 cars are 7100-7139 and the X58B cars are LV 8200-8259. Plus, all of the LV X58/X58B cars were painted white. This car, LV 7163, has fewer side ribs/panels than the X58 and the ends are the Pullman/Despatch style. The PC class for these cars is X65. His research shows that these cars were built by Despatch Shops during the Penn Central era(1969 if he recalls properly). Penn Central "inherited" the same partial ownership of the LV that the PRR had and built a few groups of cars for them as the PRR did. To date, he has not seen any X58 cars painted green. If you have any photos of green LV X58's, let us know. (Jan 31, 2006)

Penn Central:

50' modernized boxcar. This car is interesting. It has a black logo with black lettering in the NYC-style, but white reporting marks. I learned that these were rare cars, since this scheme seems to have been used on only cars repainted in early 1968. I don't know what the circled "A" means. Roller bearing trucks. This series was off roster by at least the late 80s. More prototype and modeling information is needed about this class of boxcar.

Former NYC series 41500-41499 double-door, 50' riveted steel boxcar buil 4-56 by Despatch. PC painted car in 12-72. Car was off Conrail's roster by at least 1991. If modeling this car class in HO scale, the Branchline Trains 1000 series 50' AAR boxcar is accurate; use Champ Decals HB-388 set.

An 86' double-door autoparts boxcar. Mike was surprised to see it still in PC colors in 2000. My guess is that it was retired in storage. The PC marks look as if Conrail had painted over them but the marks wore off.

One could still find Peoria & Eastern equipment in 1979. Witness the P&E 50 foot sliding door boxcar #4337 at Kent, Ohio in January 1979. The P&E was one of those little corners of the big Penn Central and even bigger Conrail system.

New York Central:

50' double door, riveted steel boxcar. Built by Despach 4-57. Improved Youngstown steel doors. Roller bearing trucks. Cars in this series painted in NYC's 'Early Bird' scheme. Nice to see that some survived well into the 70s! If modeling this car class in HO scale, the Branchline Trains 1000 series 50' AAR boxcar should be close, if not accurate; use Champ Decals set HB-355 plus their HD-2 set.

50' boxcar with 8' Youngstown door. Tabbed sill, 4-3-1 early improved Dreadnaught end, with diagonal panel roof. These survived in PRR until at least 1980. If modeling this car class in HO scale, the Branchline Trains 1000 series 50' AAR boxcar is accurate.

50' boxcar built by Pullman-Standard at Bessemer, AL, in 11-72 and is very similar to the PS-1. The graffiti is blocking out the circular 'DF' logo below the big 'G.' This car had been retired for at least 7 years when shot in a CSX train! These cars were delivered with Youngstown doors, but somewhere along the way a Superior door was added. If modeling in HO scale, InterMountain offers this car with the original Youngstown door. To model this specific car, use Detail Associates #229-6311 10'x9'3" Superior 6-Panel door. Microscale HO decal set 87-379 will decal one class XLj boxcar, but the set has errors. The set was designed for a ribbed, plug-door boxcar, but the reporting marks are for an XLj! The provided number is 20033, but it is spaced to fit over a rib. The delivered date is correct for this XLj series (11-72), but the class is wrong. There are other minor problems with the small lettering as well. The lube plate is also missing, so use set MC-4126 or spare plates. This set needs a major revision.
