From 1977 until the late 1990s this boxcar sat at a scrap dealer. It remains an important car because it was repainted in a very early Conrail scheme in June 1976, two months after Conrail formed. As a result it lacks the large logo and is painted in Penn Central green. As you can see, it never wore the PC logo. More prototype and modeling information is needed about this class of boxcar.

The large wheels on the side of the car are Hennessy Slidewell power assists. Holidaysburg equipped a number of cars with these devices to help workers open difficult doors instead of prodding them open with forklifts. Forklifts had been damaging too many boxcar doors.

These are 69'-6" insulated boxcars built by Fruit Grower's Express in Alexandria, Virginia in 1977. They were the only insulated boxcars built for Conrail, the rest being inherited from predecessors or purchased second-hand. Nearly every car is painted in the large Conrail logo. Our rolling stock guru, Lon Godshall, has only seen one repainted in the newer small logo. The cars are equipped with a massive 14' single plug door, which makes the Eel River Models "beer car" model unusable. Cars saw assigned service, with some even being used in beer service. 376072 had been repainted at Buffalo in December 1983.

These cars were not sold to Kellogg's by Conrail. They were purchased new from Thrall by Kellogg's in 1973 and then leased to PC for exclusive use by Kellogg's. When PC decided to go bankrupt, Kellogg's withdrew the lease and reclaimed the cars because they feared that they would loose the use of them in the bankruptcy of PC. Rail Yard Models makes a cast resin HO model of these cars with custom printed decals to make either the Penn Central scheme or the later KELX "paint out". RYM has more model and prototype photos on their website. Thanks to Denis Blake for the info.
